We recently wrote a post about why your brand or business should have a blog (check that out here). But creating a blog is just the start to an effective blog campaign – you need to know how to write a post that’s effective, relevant and engages with your audience.
1: Write For The Right Audience – Before you get started writing, your blog post needs to have content that is relevant to your reader. Seems like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to get off track. When working on content or topics, just think of what you believe your audience needs to hear, or wants to know about – more specifically, what can your business offer them.
Pro Tip: Write out a content calendar every so often for the upcoming months to help keep you on track and to make sure every post you write is on target.
2: Start Strong – And by that, I mean a solid headline. With the brief amount of time that people spend scrolling their newsfeeds and glancing at other articles and blog posts, it means that your headline has to be able to capture their attention in an instant. Create a headline that is strong yet gives them a reason to read your post.
3: It’s All About The Visual – Along with skimming through headlines, people are also skimming through images and making their judgments on whether or not to read the article also based on this. The image your create or photo you choose for your blog post cover as great power to draw in readers as well as repel them or leave them confused. When selecting an image, be sure to ask yourself, what does this image have to do with your post, and if you were to see just the image and the headline, would you be able to figure out what the post topic was?
4: Let’s Get To The Point – Writing a blog post is not like writing a novel chapter; it should have a point. If you begin to start rambling, or going off in different tangents, your reader will surely loose interest before getting to your call to action (which you will have… see next tip for this). If your content is compelling, which doesn’t mean it has to be short and sweet either, your readers will be engaged from start to finish.
5: It’s All About The Call To Action – You’ve finished writing your blog post. Now what? Now it’s time to give your readers a task to do that’s related to what they’ve just read and give them an opportunity to become engaged. And this can be as simple as asking them to check out another blog post of yours that’s similar (include the hyperlink), or as much as asking them to signup for your email newsletter or email you personally for more information.
Pro tip: if you post often (which you should) be sure to mix up your CTA so you’re not saying the same thing every time.
