The whole point of urban agriculture is to help consumers get closer to their food. And we’ve written about this new trend for local here.

Whether it’s via community gardens, victory gardens, patio pot gardens or urban greenhouses we love the idea that consumers are getting involved in the process of food. The more consumers know about their food, the more they respect their food and the better food choices they make.

And big agriculture and trendy hipsters aren’t the only ones taking note of these trends. Our favorite Scandinavian furniture retailer is also getting into the game and offering their take on urban agriculture with The Farm from Space 10.

Fortune magazine recently highlighted a story featuring IKEA’s solution to fresh food for in-store dining. But it’s not just their in-store restaurant they are hoping to change. Using off the shelf supplies directly from their own stores they are hoping to bring the same DIY simplicity to home gardening as they’ve brought to everything from furniture to storage.

The simple fact that IKEA is the 7th largest restaurant chain in the world, known most for their meatballs, in-store gardens would impact a significant amount of meals every day. But the partnership with Space 10 isn’t just about IKEA, it’s about collaborating on ideas that impact how we live and work. IKEA hopes what they learn will serve as a model to inspire other restaurants to create similar gardens in their spaces as well.

While we haven’t seen any pictures yet, we can only assume that IKEA will bring the same beautiful simplicity to urban gardening that they bring to all of their products and it will only be enhanced by the green freshness that only live plants can offer.

In May they also launched a home gardening kit in their KRYDDA/VAXER series that claims to have everything you need to bring the outdoors in. And of course consumers have been making IKEA hacks famous for years and were already showing off their IKEA farming hacks as early as 2011 as this image shows.

Just another reason we love IKEA and the IKEA hack.
